Tea, health and climate change
1. Theanine is the new substance to watch. Only found in tea, not coffee, Theanine, produces a relaxed, yet alert state, after drinking around 3 cups of tea. It reduces stress and may be useful in reducing blood pressure. It may also explain improvements in sleep quality and mood upon wakening.
2. Tea consumption is known to benefit the functioning and protection of the heart. What is less well known is that black tea and green tea are equally effective in cardiovascular protection.
3. The optimal temperature for growing tea is 22 degrees celsius. With the effect of global warming, both the the yield and natural flavours of tea are likely to change as the crop will need to be grown at higher altitudes to achieve this optimum temperature.
